class=”alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-144898″ title=”Justice League” src=”×150.jpg” alt=”” width=”220″ height=”150″ />Marvel has The Avengers. DC has the Justice League.

And while Marvel were shooting The Avengers last year, Warner Bros. secretly began to put its long-gestating Justice League movie back on track by hiring Will Beall, writer of one of this year’s most anticipated movies, Gangster Squad.

There’s been talk of a Justice League movie for years, with the studio originally looking to set Adam Brody as the Flash, Megan Gale as Wonder Woman, and Armie Hammer as Batman. But the project was cut back in 2008 after the studio couldn’t get the tax breaks it was hoping for and the writers’ strike made a rewrite not possible.

But now it looks like that all could change.

Beall has become a very promising writer and favourite of the studio, hired also to write the upcoming Lethal Weapon 5 and the Logan’s Run remake that is set to re-team Ryan Gosling and Nicolas Winding Refn for what will be the third time.

With The Avengers doing such good business for Marvel, becoming the first movie of 2012 to take over a billion dollars, it’s not a surprise that Warner Bros. would want to finally set up the DC counterpart.

The Dark Knight Rises will bring to an end Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, and the studio will be wanting to set up new franchises to take its place (like Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, for example), and the Justice League could definitely be one of them.

Nothing is known of exactly what the plot would entail, with the project naturally shrouded in secrecy – it’s taken months for news that Beall has been hired to be revealed – but anticipation will pretty much automatically be high for a project like this.

Justice League’s potential superhero line-up could include Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and the Martian Manhunter.

Whether Warner Bros. would want to do the same thing as Marvel have been doing – i.e. use the same cast of the individual films – remains to be seen. Christian Bale will be stepping out of the Batman suit for the last time after The Dark Knight Rises, but there’s already been talk of a possible reboot, and it would be interesting to see if the actor who takes over will star in both that and the Justice League movie.

Snyder’s Man of Steel will of course see Henry Cavill donning the Superman suit, and though Martin Campbell’s Green Lantern was somewhat panned by critics and just about broke even at the box office, Ryan Reynold’s performance as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern was very well received, and I’d love to see him come back for a Justice League movie.

For now, it’s at least great to know that it’s back in the works, and with such a promising writer as Beall penning the script, the studio are clearly showing their interest is strong in developing this for the big screen. More as we get it.

Since graduating, I spend as much time as possible watching films/TV shows, reading books, and listening to music. So getting to write about what I love is nothing short of awesome. Biggest film-related hope for 2014/ever: Guy Ritchie announcing the RocknRolla sequel is finally moving forward.
