A Top Gun sequel is still in the works, and the writer behind Disney’s upcoming live-action reboot of The Jungle Book (which is set to be directed by Iron Man helmer Jon Favreau) has now been enlisted by Paramount and Skydance to pen the screenplay for the follow-up to the 1980s classic.

Jerry Bruckheimer is producing the movie which will see Top Gun star Tom Cruise reprise the role of ace pilot Maverick in a story which is described as being designed to, “show the relevance of good old fashioned pilots in today’s high-tech, drone-centric war environment.”

Peter Craig (The Town) wrote the previous draft, but that version of Top Gun 2 stalled when director Tony Scott – who helmed the 1986 original – tragically committed suicide in 2012.

Marks’s Jungle Book has been widely praised, and Favreau has managed to assemble a cast which includes Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson and Idris Elba as a result. He previously worked with Bruckheimer on War Dogs at Disney, a script which focused on military canines. Marks is also adapting the popular Vertigo comic book series Federal Bureau of Physics for Warner Bros.

A sequel to Top Gun certainly has a lot of potential, but do you think it’s a classic movie which should be left alone? Share your thoughts in the comments section below and stay tuned to HeyUGuys for updates!
