“The creation of the team is not the happy ending. It is the beginning of something that is complex and difficult, and now I get to dig a little deeper. And maybe, while I’m digging, just twist that knife. And that’s exciting for me.”
It’s exciting for us, too. While it gives little away about the film’s actual plot (it is a little early, after all), Whedon’s response does suggest that the sequel will further explore the team dynamic established in the first film, and Marvel’s Cinematic Universe as a whole. This is, of course, completely in keeping with the comments made by Whedon before he was formally attached to the sequel — that he would like any follow-up to be smaller and more character-focussed.
As for that Cinematic Universe itself, Whedon was quick to clarify his role as Phase 2’s official overseer. With Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy and (possibly) Ant-Man all due out before his own movie, Whedon has to make sure that nothing drastically contradicts his own film’s intended plot. All while working on a television series set in the same universe.
“Very talented people are writing and directing these movies, and what I don’t want to be is the guy they dread, who’s going to come in and say [affects pompous British accent] ‘Oh, well I have the power to say change this.’ I’m not that.”
The Avengers 2 is scheduled for U.K. release on May 1st, 2015.
