Josh O’Connor has entered into negotiations to reteam with Luca Guadagnino for his gay romance feature ‘Separate Rooms’.

The project is an adaptation of the eponymous novel by the late Italian writer Pier Vittorio Tondelli. The story follows an Italian writer named Leo who is mourning the loss of his boyfriend.

O’Connor is up for the role of Leo, a 30-something man who has a passionate romance with a shy German musician named Thomas. The story takes place in Milan, Paris, London, and Florence, and revolves around the different types of separation that the two lovers face. After meeting in Paris, they begin a long affair and travel together to various European cities over three years. Although they live separately, they often write to each other and meet whenever possible. However, they both suffer from loneliness. At one point, Thomas starts an affair with another girl, which makes Leo deeply jealous. Later, Thomas is diagnosed with an illness that will ultimately lead to his death in his hometown of Munich.

The feature is said to be likely Guadagnino’s next film. It is being produced by Italy’s Lorenzo Mieli under his deal with Fremantle.

O’Connor and Guadagnino have previously worked together on the upcoming tennis love triangle film ‘Challengers’ alongside Zendaya and Mike Faist.
