Wrestler turned actor, John Cena has entered into negotiations to join the cast of James Gunn’s ‘Suicide Squad’.

Cena would join Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jai Courtney who returns as Captain Boomerang. Idris Elba also joined the cast, initially replacing Will Smith in the role of Deadshot, but after having scrapped the character, Elba will be playing another undisclosed role. Cena’s role at this stage is also unknown.

Gunn is set to write and direct the follow-up. who better to convey the story Gunn developed than Gunn himself. The sequel, which has the working title of ‘The Suicide Squad’ is said to have Gunn’s tonal voice to the script. The project is also being branded as a revamp rather than a straight-up sequel to David Ayer’s film. Filming is due to begin this September, and a release date of  August 6, 2021, has been set.

Even though ‘Suicide Squad’ was a flop amongst critics, the film still went on to make a staggering $746 million at the worldwide box office. It has also gone on to spawn a spin-off for Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn ‘Birds of Prey’ which will also star Mary Elizabeth-Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, and Rosie Perez and has recently wrapped filming.

Cena’s latest roles were ‘Blockers’, where he played an overprotective Father and the ‘Transformers’ spin-off, ‘Bumblebee’. Cena’s upcoming roles include voicing a character in the Robert Downey Jr. vehicle ‘The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle’.
