Star Wars: The Force Awakens is one of the highest grossing movies of all-time after earning a massive $2 billion, and while some fans found fault with the J.J. Abrams helmed release, the majority agree that he restored the franchise to greatness after those terrible prequels.

However, in a new interview with Avatar and The Terminator director James Cameron, the filmmaker has shared some thoughts on the movie which points to him not being a fan.

After confirming that he recently chatted with George Lucas about Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Cameron went on to explain, “I have to say that I felt that George’s group of six films had more innovative visual imagination, and this film was more a retrenchment to things you had seen before and characters you had seen before. It took a few baby steps forward with new characters. So, for me, the jury is out. I want to see where they go with it.”

What’s interesting about this is whether or not Lucas shares Cameron’s perspective about what Abrams did with the franchise, but the vast majority of Star Wars fans are just relieved the creator is no longer involved with these movies (Disney even ditched his story outline).

Next up for the Star Wars franchise is Rogue One, while Episode VIII will follow next year. Cameron meanwhile continues to devote his time to those long delayed Avatar sequels.
