If you’re not a fan of the Star Wars prequels (and chances are that a lot of you aren’t), the prospect of Hayden Christensen reprising his role as Anakin Skywalker probably doesn’t fill you with joy. Well, if the latest Star Wars rumour to do the rounds is to be believed, that’s exactly what’s on the cards for Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII which is set for release in 2017.

Apparently there’s a very strong chance that Darth Vader is going to show up in Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars: Rogue One, something which makes sense when you take into account the fact that movie takes place between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.

If anything, that was to be expected, but here’s where things get really surprising; Making Star Wars reports that, “A team in the U.K. are soon heading to the U.S. to begin training Hayden Christensen for a Star Wars: Episode VIII appearance of some sort.” What?!

This could be for a flashback, a ghostly apparition (unlikely if the actor needs to train for his role) or something else altogether, but whatever the answer, this is quite the shocker.

It’s also sure to be a controversial decision if true, but it was rumoured a long time ago that Star Wars: The Force Awakens will feature flashbacks, so there’s a very good chance that the events of this new trilogy will need to call back to unrevealed moments in the past.

Making Star Wars has been mostly reliable over the past few years with Star Wars rumours, but it is of course best to take this with a pinch of salt for the time being. Don’t forget to check out our ten biggest unanswered Star Wars: The Force Awakens questions right here!
