Though the titular character of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug may be a certain Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) – it is in fact Thorin who has more of a character arc, and is the most intriguing, fleshed out character within this second instalment. So it was therefore a pleasure for us to sit down with the 6’2″ dwarf, Richard Armitage.

Armitage’s Thorin takes something of a dark turn in the film, as his greed and desire to claim back his kingdom stands in the way of his loyalty to his Company of Dwarves, and the English actor discusses such character development. Armitage also tells us how his own personal journey as an actor mirrored that of his character, and how he  limped out of bed every morning…

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is released on December 13, and you can read our review here.
