Today looked to have resigned itself to being just another Tuesday. That was only, however, until news reached us that the previously reported How to Train Your Dragon sequel is in fact set to be the first act in a much bigger story.

Dean Deblois, co-director of the first film and lone director of the sequel, has revealed that he is currently working on the second draft of the movie, which he hopes to be the second instalment in a trilogy. At Saturday’s Annie Awards, where Dragon reined supreme, Deblois opened up to THR.

“It’s going to be quite epic. We are treating How To Train Your Dragon as the first act in a much larger story. As we head into this one, the world expands. Everything is much bigger with still the heartfelt qualities that made the first one resonate so much with audiences. There are no longer restrictions to this tiny island in the North Sea. They have the entire Northern hemisphere within their grasp.”

So far so mouth watering. The director made it clear that this first sequel, set for a 2013 release, would not feel like another random adventure with the same characters but a continuation of the original’s story. Returning producer Bonnie Arnold soon stepped in to elaborate.

“It’s going to be more fun adventures with Hiccup and Toothless. There will be some new dragons and maybe some new characters. It’s the further adventures of Hiccup on his journey of becoming a man and the ultimate leader of the Viking clan.”

All that remains is for John Powell to return with another mesmerising score and we look set for another master-class in animated perfection.
