Depicting an army of one million Persian soldiers facing off against only 300 Spartans, this stylised and claustrophobic battle was gloriously violent, completely over the top, and visually stunning.
It was the way that Snyder essentially brought the comic book to life that makes this one stand out, though the use of slow motion and the sheer level of excitement it inspires in the viewer also play a huge role in that.
