Gravity-Teaser-PosterReturning to the helm for the first time since the Oscar-nominated Children of Men, Alfonso Cuarón will once more be a strong contender come awards season this year for his next feature, Gravity.

The first trailer is set to debut later today, following a brief first glimpse which surfaced this week. And ahead of that first trailer’s release, Warner Bros. have debuted a great first poster teasing the problems that await the leading duo, Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.

Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone—tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness.

The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left.

But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.

Cuarón is directing from a script he wrote with his son, Jonás Cuarón (Año uña / Year of the Nail).

With Bullock and Clooney in the leads, and Cuarón behind the camera, it’s easy to see why the film is already being touted as an Oscar contender. Warner Bros. came away with the top prize at this year’s awards, with Ben Affleck’s Argo taking home Best Picture (amongst numerous other awards at the Oscars and elsewhere). And it looks like Gravity will be their big contender this year, with the likes of Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel most likely leading the technical categories.

Gravity is set for release in 3D and IMAX 3D on October 4th in the US, with its UK release date set for two weeks later on 18th October. For now, here’s the great first poster, and be sure to come back later when the first trailer hits in full.
