It’s been rumoured for a while, but Star Trek 4 has now been given the green light from Paramount Pictures, Skydance, and Bad Robot. The movie has neither a release date nor director as of right now, but expect those details to be sorted out over the next few months, especially with J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay currently working together on the screenplay.

Chris Pine has been confirmed as returning, and the rest of the current rebooted cast are expected to join him. However, here’s where things get really interesting for Trek fans.

According to Deadline, the plot of this fourth instalment of the franchise will see, “Captain Kirk cross paths with a man he never had a chance to meet, but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born: his father. Chris Hemsworth, who appeared in the 2009 reboot Star Trek, will return to play George Kirk.” That’s a very unexpected development!

So, will he be a clone? A time traveller? Or has he been trapped in the Nexus all this time? We’ll have to wait and see, but pairing Hemsworth up with Pine is going to make the next Star Trek movie pretty much a guaranteed hit at the box office when it’s finally released.

With Comic-Con around the corner, more details on this may follow later this week…
