If you grew up in the UK of the 1980s you may remember being invaded every Sunday lunchtime by a group of blue creatures living in the forest surviving the threats of the evil human forces who sought to destroy them.

No, it wasn’t Avatar: The animated series, it was The Smurfs and the short cartoons, imported from Belgium, told various small tales about these creatures being hunted by the gloriously named Gargamel and his cat, Azrael while living and mainly singing in the woods.

Being a recongisable property, redolent with nostalgia, there was a collective absence of jaw drop when the movie adaptation was announced, and today UGO have the first look at the CG rendering of Genericy Smurf.

Looks pretty good, but there’s not a lot of improvement to be made, apart from changing the god-awful theme tune…
