Into the Woods is Rob Marshall’s (Chicago) big screen adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical, and though we’ve seen a trailer and a number of stills from the movie, the latest covers of Entertainment Weekly gives us perhaps our best look yet at the impressive cast and the characters they’re playing.

As well as the first image of Johnny Depp as The Wolf, we get to see Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), The Witch (Meryl Streep), Rapunzel (Mackenzie Mauzy), Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), The Prince (Chris Pine), The Baker (James Corden), and The Baker’s Wife (Emily Blunt). As we said, it’s a very impressive cast!

“I didn’t want this to look like a cartoon world,” Marshall says of his take on the 1987 fairy tale. “It’s not sunny, sunny, sunny—we wanted a sense of danger.” Streep meanwhile adds: “I’ve been offered many witches over the years, starting when I was 40, and I said no to all of them. But this was really fun because it played with the notion of what witches mean. They represented age and ugliness and scary powers we don’t understand. So here’s my opportunity to say, here’s what you wish for when you’re getting old.”

Into the Woods is set to be released on December 25th in the US and will reach the UK next January.
