Ry Russo-Young returned to Sundance at the start of the year with Nobody Walks, an incredible third feature film from the young writer-director that jointly won the Special Jury Prize for Excellence in Independent Filmmaking with James Ponsoldt’s Smashed.
The film stars Olivia Thirlby and John Krasinski in the leads, with fantastic support from Rosemarie DeWitt, Justin Kirk, India Ennenga, and Dylan McDermott, with Russo-Young directing from a script she co-wrote with the brilliant Lena Dunham.
Ahead of its release through VoD next month, the first trailer and poster have debuted online over at Apple and The Playlist, giving us a terrific first look at the film.
“Martine, a 23-year-old artist from New York, arrives in Los Angeles to stay in the pool house of a family living in the hip and hilly community of Silver Lake. Peter, the father, has agreed to help Martine complete sound design on her art film as a favor to his wife. Martine innocently enters the seemingly idyllic life of this open-minded family with two kids and a relaxed Southern California vibe. Like a bolt of lightning, her arrival sparks a surge of energy that awakens suppressed impulses in everyone and forces them to confront their own fears and desires. Exquisitely orchestrated by Ry Russo-Young (You Won’t Miss Mescreened at the 2009 Festival) and cowritten by Lena Dunham (Tiny Furniture), this potent charting of inner urges and sufferings links characters in an intricate dance of lust, denial, and deception.”
After debuting to great first reviews at Sundance in January, Russo-Young brought her wonderful latest feature across the Atlantic for the first ever Sundance London, which is where I saw and instantly feel in love with the film.
Thirlby gives the best performance of her already-stellar career, showing so much promise for the rising young star, and I can’t wait to see the film again.
Nobody Walks will be released through VoD on 6th September, ahead of its theatrical release on 12th October in the US. No word yet on a UK date, but I hope we’ll be seeing it before the year’s end too, because I’ve been eagerly awaiting a second viewing since its UK debut in April.
