Audience members who happened to stumble into Monday’s screening of Penumbra most certainly must have been expecting to see a riveting and somewhat strange horror film.  What they most likely didn’t expect, was a surprise appearance from Phantasm director Don Coscarelli.

It’s been almost 10 years since the director’s last film, Bubba Ho-Tep hit the big screen, and while that particular Coscarelli franchise may be at an indefinite standstill, fans of the director’s work will be pleased to know that 2012 will feature the release of a new film from Don entitled “John Dies at the End”. As it turns out Mr. Coscarelli had chosen this moment to premiere a teaser for his new film!

John Dies at the End features a whole host of actor’s including, Clancy Brown (Starship Troopers), Roger North (Pan’s Labyrinth), and Paul Giamatti (Sideways), just to name a few.  The film is based on David Wong’s comedic horror novel of the same name, and centers around the story of two friends Dave (Chase Williams), and John (Rob Mayes), and the strange happenings that occur when one of them accidentally takes a mysterious drug known only as ‘Soy Sauce’.  Think ‘Limitless’ but with that touch for the strange and horrific that only somebody like Don Coscarelli has.

If the teaser is any indication of what to expect, then there are truly some awesome times ahead! The production value seems to be pretty high for a Coscarelli film, and the brief clips we saw of Giamatti’s performance, quickly are turning this into one of my most anticipated films of next year. Unfortunately the movie isn’t set to open until 2012, but you can still at least watch a brief intro from Don as well as a Teaser for the film below!

Thanks to Doug Jones for the Intro footage!
