Ewan McGregor has been set to play the role of the villain, Black Mask, in the forthcoming ‘Birds of Prey’ movie.

Black Mask is a Gotham City mob boss who leads the False Face Society gang and blames others for his shortcomings. In the comics, Black Mask is the criminal alias of Roman Sionis, a brutally sadistic kingpin with an ebony black mask which was burned onto his face. He has a very similar background to Gotham’s Batman, born into a wealthy Gotham City family but instead of inheriting the family business when his parents were murdered in a back alley, Roman killed his parents because they didn’t approve of his girlfriend at the time.

In the comics, they’re a team known as the Birds of Prey. Made up of characters like Batgirl, Black Canary, Poison Ivy, and yes, Harley Quinn, fans have been hoping to see them reach the big screen for a number of years now.

Cathy Yan is set to direct from a script by Christina Hodson while Robbie, Sue Kroll and Bryan Unkeless will produce.

McGregor was last seen on the big screen in ‘Christopher Robin’. He will also be seen in Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep as the adult Danny Torrance alongside Rebecca Ferguson.

The film is set to open on February 7th 2020.
