Joseph-Gordon-Levitt-and-Scarlett-Johansson-in-Don-JonMarking Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s anticipated feature directorial debut, Don Jon is very much a must-see movie of the year, with Gordon-Levitt working on both sides of the camera for his first film.

The movie premiered at Sundance at the start of the year, and quickly became a very hot property, ultimately acquired by Relativity with a very confident deal to promote the film.

We saw a terrific first trailer surface last month. And in honour of Father’s Day yesterday, Gordon-Levitt released the first red-band clip.

Jon Martello (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a strong, handsome, good old fashioned guy. His buddies call him Don Jon due to his ability to “pull” a different woman every weekend, but even the finest fling doesn’t compare to the bliss he finds alone in front of the computer watching pornography. Barbara Sugarman (Scarlett Johansson) is a bright, beautiful, good old fashioned girl. Raised on romantic Hollywood movies, she’s determined to find her Prince Charming and ride off into the sunset. Wrestling with good old fashioned expectations of the opposite sex, Jon and Barbara struggle against a media culture full of false fantasies to try and find true intimacy in this unexpected comedy written and directed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

As you can see below, Gordon-Levitt is of course joined by Scarlett Johansson, who plays the female lead of Barbara Sugarman. And they star alongside Tony Danza, Julianne Moore, Brie Larson, and Rob Brown.

Gordon-Levitt is directing from his own script, with past collaborator Ram Bergman (Looper, Brick) producing alongside Nicolas Chartier (The Hurt Locker).

Don Jon will be released in the US on September 27th, and has its UK release date set for 15th November. I can’t wait. Here’s the great first clip from the film – and a reminder that it’s highly red-band in nature, so very much not suitable for work.
