After very nearly losing Channing Tatum over the actor’s demands for a larger fee for the X-Men spinoff, Gambit has hit another bump in the road today with director Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) forced to exit the project over some recent scheduling issues.

With the script undergoing changes, the budget has ended up being bigger than extended, resulting in the shoot being extended and thereby delayed (it’s also thought that working around Mardi Gras may have caused some issues), hence the filmmaker’s departure.

“I was very much looking forward to working with my friend Channing and the team at Fox, but regrettably a push in the start date now conflicts with another project,” Wyatt said in a statement. “I thank them for the opportunity, and I know that Gambit will make a terrific film.” This is a pretty major blow to the project, and while Fox will no doubt act quickly to find his replacement, Wyatt being at the helm is the reason many were excited for Gambit!

With Hugh Jackman wrapping up his tenure as Wolverine, Fox are hoping both Gambit and Deadpool will launch new solo franchises for them. Josh Zetumer penned the script for the film, based on a treatment by comic book writer and Gambit co-creator Chris Claremont.
