Introduced in the pages of Uncanny X-Men #266 in 1990, Gambit is a fan-favourite member of the X-Men.
However, that made the news
That won’t be Gambit’s big screen debut however. He made that in X-Men Origins: Wolverine played by John Carter and True Detective star Taylor Kitsch. He was pretty good in the role, but to call his take on Gambit memorable would be something of an overstatement. The events of X-Men: Days of Future Past wiped that timeline out of existence anyway, so we just have to accept that he’ll look like Channing Tatum now…
Gambit is something of an obscure character, and even hardcore comic book fans may not be that familiar with his history unless they’re avid X-Men readers. He’s a fascinating character however, and this movie has the potential to shine in a year where it’s definitely overshadowed by some truly high profile releases.
Here, we take you through all there is to know about Gambit to fully prep you for his movie next year…
10. His Origin Story
Who is Gambit? Abandoned as a baby because of his red and black eyes, Remy LeBeau was later stolen from a New Orleans orphanage by the Thieves Guild, and ended up being watched over by a gang of street thieves known as Fagan’s Mob. He was later adopted by the leader of the Thieves Guild, and as he advanced into his teenage years, the young mutant’s newfound abilities came in very handy when it came to becoming a master thief.
It was eventually decided that Gambit would marry a member of the Assassin’s Guild to unite the warring factions, but he was banished for killing his bride’s brother in self defence. From there, he travelled the world and honed his skills, eventually coming into contact with Mister Sinister. However, realising he was sided with a villain, Gambit set out to redeem himself and joined the X-Men.
