‘Cobra Kai’ actor Xolo Maridueña has entered into negotiations to star in HBO Max and DC Film’s ‘Blue Beetle.’

The story will centre on the 2006 Jamie Reyes iteration of the character – a Mexican-American teenager who discovers the Blue Beetle scarab on the way home from school with two of his best friends Paco and Brenda, the trinket half-buried in a disused lot.

Reyes takes the scarab home, curious as to what it might be. That night, it comes alive and grafts itself to the base of Jaime’s spine – providing him with a suit of extraterrestrial armour that can be modified to enhance his speed and strength as well as to create weapons, wings, and shields.

Angel Manuel Sot will direct from a script by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (“Miss Bala,” “Scarface”).

The film will mark the first Latinx Superhero to be adapted for the big screen.

Production on the feature is scheduled to begin early next year, with John Rickard producing for HBO Max. Zev Foreman is executive-producing.

Maridueña, who is of Mexican, Cuban and Ecuadorian heritage, currently stars as Miguel Diaz in the Netflix original series ‘Cobra Kai,’ alongside original ‘Karate Kid’ actors Ralph Macchio and William Zabka. The fourth season of ‘Cobra Kai’ will premiere towards the end of 2021.
