Weeks after he appeared at Comic-Con to promote the movie, Channing Tatum is now said to be close to dropping out of upcoming 2016 X-Men spinoff Gambit. We had all assumed that he was officially signed up to star, but we now know that isn’t actually the case.

Rupert Wyatt is directing the movie, but The Wrap reveals that as Tatum’s contract is in jeopardy of falling apart and he’s planning on exiting the project, the hunt for a new leading man will soon begin. Seeing as the Jump Street star is the main reason Gambit is happening in the first place, you have to believe that 20th Century Fox are panicking right now.

Spectre’s Lea Seydoux is among those who have been testing for the lead female role, and Fox apparently won’t scrap the project if things with Tatum don’t end up working out.

While things could still work out between the studio and actor, it doesn’t sound good right now. Tatum won the role by talking about his love of the character in interviews. From there, X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner took the idea to the studio and got Gambit the green light. Just a few weeks ago, the actor was talking about his preparations for the role too.
