A biopic revolving around Queen frontman Freddie Mercury has been talked about for years, but the surviving members of the iconic British rock group have thrown a fair few spanners into the works along the way. Sacha Baron Cohen was at one point set to star as Mercury with Peter Morgan writing, but that fell apart due to creative differences with the band.

The same thing happened with the version from director Dexter Fletcher which would have starred Ben Whishaw, but things are finally moving with Bohemian Rhapsody at Fox.

According to Deadline, X-Men: Apocalypse helmer Bryan Singer is in talks to direct, while Emmy winning Mr. Robot star Rami Malek in being eyed to take on the role of Mercury.

The Theory Of Everything’s Anthony McCarten wrote the latest version of the screenplay, and given the talent involved, it’s fair to say this could be an Oscar contender when it’s finally released. Given his commitments to the upcoming 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and possibly even another X-Men movie, it’s hard right now to say when exactly that might be.

Either way, the fact this Freddie Mercury biopic is actually beginning to take shape is very exciting indeed, so here’s hoping it doesn’t fall apart as quickly as previous iterations!
