A few days ago we had a lovely Christmas surprise with the first teaser trailer for Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049, the eagerly-awaited sequel to Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic. It was a wonderful return to that world, with the crowded electric chaos of the city contrasting nicely with the sun-blasted outskirts we follow Ryan Gosling through to its ultimate end – a confrontation with Harrison Ford’s Rick Deckard.

Now we’ve got more images from the film, which focus on Gosling and Ford in character as well as some very nice behind the scenes shots of director Villeneuve and producer Ridley Scott.

EW have got the pics, which we’ve included below, giving us our best look yet at the intricate neon-strewn world of Blade Runner we know and love. We’re still yet to see the extended cast which includes Jared Leto, Robin Wright, Dave Bautista, Lennie James and Ana de Armas.

James spoke to us briefly about working the project, and the intense secrecy surrounding it. This is not surprising given the anticipation for the film, which joins Alien: Covenant as the second of two Ridley Scott revistations. Speaking to Screen Daily Villeneuve confirmed the film’s R-Rating, and talked about the practical feel to the production.

“My producers are finding it fun to remind me that it will be one of the most expensive R-rated independent feature films ever made.”

“I can count on my fingers the amount of times we put a green screen on set. Most of the movie was done on camera, me and [cinematographer] Roger Deakins worked very hard to do it that way.

My actors were not walking on green screens all day long. CGI is a strong tool for backgrounds and extensions but what is around the actors needs to be as real as possible. When I watch a movie that’s mostly CGI, I’m disengaged.”

Another quote also suggests that we may see more Blade Running in the future…

“I’m doomed, I love sci-fi. I have two more ideas now that I would love to do. [And] Blade Runner could go on… we’ll see how this one goes.”
