Just as Joker readies itself for a likely Oscar-haul this coming weekend, we step back into the dark and twisted world of the DC character, but this time, from a rather different perspective. Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey delves into the life of Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) to make for a stylistic production, which is full of fantastic visuals, brilliant fight sequences – and a collection of some truly kick-ass female heroes (well, they’re villains too, sort of).

It couldn’t be more different to the Joaquin Phoenix picture, and yet it’s just as engaging. We had the pleasure of sitting down not only with director Cathy Yan, but also with two of the film’s shining lights, in Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Ella Jay Basco.

Synopsis

It’s open season on Harley Quinn when her explosive breakup with the Joker puts a big fat target on her back. Unprotected and on the run, Quinn faces the wrath of narcissistic crime boss Black Mask, his right-hand man, Victor Zsasz, and every other thug in the city. But things soon even out for Harley when she becomes unexpected allies with three deadly women — Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya.

Birds of Prey is released on February 7th
