The news that the long rumoured Ghostbusters 3 had been scrapped in favour of a reboot featuring an all-female cast was met with a mixed response from fans of the beloved franchise.

While some welcomed a fresh take on the next Ghostbusters movie from Bridesmaids director Paul Feig, many more said at the time that they would prefer either a third instalment as planned or for the first two classic movies to be left well enough alone in a bid to avoid tarnishing the series.

In an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival, Ghostbusters star Bill Murray didn’t hesitate in giving his blessing to the “controversial” reboot which will apparently begin production next year.

“It sounds great to me. It sounds as good an idea as any other! There are a lot of women that could scare off any kind of vapor! No, it’s a grand idea, I don’t know who they’re talking about, but it’s a good idea, I would watch it!” The actor, who played the now legendary Dr. Peter Venkman, added: “I mean, I love Robert Palmer’s videos, so why wouldn’t I love the female Ghostbusters?”
