It’s seven years since director Paul Feig introduced us to two very different mums – vlogger and seemingly perfect mother Stephanie (Anna Kendrick) and glamorous career-orientated Emily (Blake Lively) – who become close friends. Or are they? That was the question at the heart of A Simple Favour, the glossy dark comedy that captured the imaginations of audiences all over the world – so much so that the pair are re-united this week for a sequel.
The action in Another Simple Favour shifts to the idyllic Italian island of Capri. Now divorced from husband Sean (Henry Golding), Emily is about to marry a wealthy Italian businessman in extravagant style. Putting the events of the previous film behind them, she invites Stephanie to be her maid of honour at what it’s no spoiler to say will be an unforgettable wedding for everybody involved.
The film’s not just a reunion for Stephanie and Emily, but nearly all of the characters from the original and, as Feig and Golding reveal in the exclusive interview below, everybody was more than happy to sign up for a second outing. “They had so much fun on the first one,” Feig recalls. For Golding, a phone call from the director always means a great project and “the answer is always going to be yes”.
Having long resisted making follow-ups to any of his films, Feig is relaxed about making his first sequel and agrees that his new film leaves the door open just enough for a third Favour to be a distinct possibility. He’s even more receptive to the idea of a sequel to his much-loved comedy, Spy (2015). “If there is going to be another of my movies to have a sequel, it’s Spy. Never say never. And there’s no Spy without Jason Statham!”
