Not too long ago, we brought you the first comments from Benedict Cumberbatch about him playing Doctor Strange (you can find that interview by clicking here) in the 2016 Marvel Studios movie of the same name.

The Sherlock star has now gone into a little more detail about taking on the role, and as you might expect, he’s very excited about becoming part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The hunt for an actor to play Doctor Strange lasted for a good chunk of 2014, but Cumberbatch has been a fan-favourite choice for years.

Asked whether he considers Doctor Strange a risk (the character is after all one of the more unusual members of the Marvel Universe), he said: “I don’t think it’s a risk because of Marvel. Marvel is a stable of bringing out ordinary comic characters and turning them into screen-like gods. It’s very different, it’s an Astral Plane. There’s a huge new element to this Marvel universe that’s going to be employed in building this story and this character. But you know, I’m really excited about it, about working with Scott [Derrickson] whose imagination is endless, and all the boys and girls at Marvel who know what they’re doing.”

It’s a great point, especially when you look at the success of Marvel movies like Guardians of the Galaxy!

The interviewer then pointed out that Cumberbatch once taught English to Tibetan Buddhist monks in India, and pointed out that Doctor Strange’s journey at one point takes him to similar surroundings when he meets The Ancient One. However, the actor was smart enough not to reveal any specifics! “Ahh … you’ll have to wait and see. I’m not going to be eked out on any spoilers or reveals now. It’s quite a way off but I’m very excited about that spiritual dimension, obviously. It’s something that’s been a huge part of my life.”

Finally, Cumberbatch was asked whether he was a fan of the character growing up and if he ever read the comic books starring Doctor Strange as a child. “Growing up, no. I didn’t read many comics at all. Asterix a bit. I think that was it. There weren’t many comics in my household — [in a self-mocking voice] “I’m so deprived.” We didn’t have Marvel so much. But you can bet your bottom dollar I’m reading them now, avidly.”

That’s the right answer!
