Berlin is giving us a good haul of newsworthy tidbits and, while not as mind blowing as the (fallacious, as it turns out) Von Trier/Scorses Taxi Driver craziness, the announcement, carried by Screen Daily, that Andy Serkis will be teaming with Nick Cave to produce a new screen version of Bertold Brecht and Kurt Weill’s 1928 musical The Threepenny Opera is as intriguing as it is unexpected.

Oh, and they’ll be motion capture thrown in somewhere along the way.

There’s no telling exactly how this one will pan out – but a mo-capped Andy Serkis for Macheath (Mack the Knife to his less fortunate friends) seems likely as does Cave’s involvement in the staging and the music, but with its grime-laden backdrop and black hearted familial jealousy this seems certain to be a unique cinematic offering.

The strangest tales are leaking from Berlin, I can’t wait to see what happens next…
