Robert-Redford-in-All-Is-LostDebuting at Cannes to almost universally positive early reviews – you can read our own review here – All Is Lost marks the sophomore feature of writer-director J.C. Chandor, who wowed audiences and critics alike with 2011 debut, Margin Call.

That film boasted a tremendous script, with exceptional dialogue, earning Chandor a well-deserved nomination for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars last year.

And it’s been incredibly interesting to discover that his follow-up film, All Is Lost, is dialogue-free. Its US release date is just over two months away, and now Lionsgate have debuted the first trailer over on Yahoo Movies.

Deep into a solo voyage in the Indian Ocean, an unnamed man wakes to find his 39-foot yacht taking on water after a collision with a shipping container left floating on the high seas. With his navigation equipment and radio disabled, the man sails unknowingly into the path of a violent storm. Despite his success in patching the breached hull, his mariner’s intuition and a strength that belies his age, the man barely survives the tempest.

Using only a sextant and nautical maps to chart his progress, he is forced to rely on ocean currents to carry him into a shipping lane in hopes of hailing a passing vessel. But with the sun unrelenting, sharks circling and his meagre supplies dwindling, the ever-resourceful sailor soon finds himself staring his mortality in the face.

Robert Redford is front and centre throughout, with Chandor once more directing from his own script.

All Is Lost is set to be released in the US on October 18th, with its release clearly primed for the Oscars, boasting plenty of awards buzz already coming out of Cannes. Its UK release date has fortunately been moved up a couple of weeks, now opening on 29th November on our shores.
