Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic American novel, The Great Gatsby, is one of the most anticipated films of the year, and after getting the intoxicating first images from the film at the end of last year, we now have a great new image of Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Indian actor Amitabh Bachchan.
Luhrmann co-wrote the script with frequent collaborator Craig Pearce (Moulin Rouge!, Romeo + Juliet), and has assembled a fine cast supporting DiCaprio and Maguire in the leads, including Carey Mulligan as the female lead, Daisy Buchanan, alongside Isla Fisher, Joel Edgerton, Jason Clarke, and Elizabeth Debicki.

The film marks prominent Indian actor Bachchan’s debut feature in Hollywood, with THR putting out this first look at him in the film in promotion of that.
Though its release is still a good few months away, with a star-studded cast like this, and the film having wrapped earlier this year, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see the first trailer for the film attached to one of the big blockbusters of the summer.
My guess would be attaching the first trailer to Warner Bros.’s The Dark Knight Rises, since they’re distributing both films, and The Dark Knight Rises will almost certainly have the biggest audience of any film this summer. But we shall see.
The Great Gatsby will be released – in 3D, no less – on Christmas Day in the US, followed by a day later on Boxing Day here in the UK, so forget any idea you had of spending Boxing Day with your family at home, and take them all out to the cinema for what I’m hoping will be one of the finest films of the year.
DiCaprio will be going head-to-head with himself in the US, with Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained getting a Christmas Day release there as well, and both films are expected to be very much big contenders in the Oscar season early next year.
