Carey Mulligan has officially joined the cast of Focus Features’ highly anticipated adaptation of ‘The Bell Jar,’ starring global music superstar Billie Eilish in her feature film acting debut.
While the studio has yet to formally announce the project, multiple reports indicate that Mulligan will portray Mrs. Greenwood, the mother of Esther Greenwood, the novel’s troubled protagonist who will be played by Eilish.
Based on Sylvia Plath’s seminal 1963 novel, ‘The Bell Jar’ is regarded as one of the most influential works of modern literature. The semi-autobiographical story follows Esther Greenwood, a gifted young woman whose ambitions and identity begin to unravel as she struggles with mental illness and the expectations placed upon her by society.

Acclaimed filmmaker Sarah Polley, the Oscar-winning writer behind ‘Women Talking,’ is directing the adaptation.
The Academy Award-nominated Mulligan is known for acclaimed performances in films including ‘Promising Young Woman,’ ‘Maestro,’ ‘An Education,’ and ‘She Said.’
The adaptation is being produced by Plan B, Studiocanal, and Joy Coalition, with Focus Features backing the film.
Production details, additional casting, and a release date have yet to be announced.
