One month after the nominations were announced at the end of last year, last night saw Ricky Gervais return to his role as host of the 69th Golden Globe Awards. As you can imagine, with the Golden Globes being one of a handful of the most prestige awards in film and television, many will look to the results for an indication of what we can expect from the Academy Awards in just over a month’s time.

Last year saw the release of some fantastic films, and so many of them deserved the recognition that comes with winning an award like this. Of course, not all the films can go home with an award in tow, and here’s a run-down of the results from last night. Let us know your thoughts on last night’s results in the comments below – how did your favourites fare?

As you can see, quite a variety of winners all round, with The Descendants and The Artist taking some of the biggest in the film category, including Best Motion Picture and Best Actor in each of their respective categories. If you’re yet to see either (like me), The Artist should be in your local cinema right now, and The Descendants will be coming to the UK later this month, released on 27th January.

The nominations for the 84th Academy Awards will also be announced later this month, on 24th January, with the awards themselves presented on 26th February, and it will be interesting to see how they match-up in comparison to the Golden Globes.
