If you were getting excited about the prospect of a Jump Street/Men In Black crossover which would see Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum hunting down aliens alongside Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, you may want to prepare yourself for disappointment. While we still don’t have an update on that possible mashup, we do now Smith isn’t going to be part of it.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, franchise producers Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald confirmed that a revival of some sort is still in the works at Sony Pictures. “We’re in the middle of it. It’s very active,” Parkes revealed after confirming that Smith isn’t part of those discussions, with MacDonald chiming in to confirm, “It will be reinvented as a trilogy.”

Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s busy schedule (they’re attached in some form to everything from The LEGO Movie 2 to a Star Wars movie revolving around a young Han Solo) could have led to the plan for that Jump Street crossover being scrapped by the studio, and there’s a chance that this new trilogy is simply going to be a complete reboot or reinvention of the franchise.

Whatever the answer, it will be interesting to see how Sony’s plan for the Men In Black franchise comes together. They’re no doubt hoping to recapture the success of the first movie and a lack of Will Smith certainly hasn’t stopped that Independence Day sequel from moving ahead, so we’ll be sure to keep you updated on what’s next for the Men In Black!
