It’s rare that one director stays on board for an entire franchise, with new filmmakers often taking over from the second instalment onwards for whatever reason (see: The Hunger Games). However, that won’t be the case with The Maze Runner series as it has been confirmed by Wes Ball that he will indeed be returning to helm the third and final instalment.

Talking to Variety, Ball had this to say about coming back for The Maze Runner: The Death Cure. “Ultimately our goal is to create an awesome three-movie trilogy. Not many people have done that and now I have the opportunity to do that. I am directing the third film and we’ve already been busy preparing and working on the final conclusion of this saga.”

The Maze Runner movies have been a moderate success, but haven’t made a huge impact at the box office or been much of a hit with critics. Still, it’s good to see that Ball is getting the chance to finish what he started, and refreshing that the studio has decided against splitting the final book in two (which they probably would have in the franchise was more popular).

Maze Runner: The Death Cure is currently set to be released on February 17th, 2017.
