Safety Not Guaranteed was one of the most anticipated films heading into Sundance back at the start of the year, and came out earning both critical acclaim and audience approval, something that doesn’t happen that often.
The brilliant first trailer and poster surfaced back in March, before it made its UK debut at Sundance London last month. I fell in love with the film, and you can read our five-star review of it here to see why.
Apple have debuted a great new featurette that takes a look at the true story behind the film, inspired by a real ad placed in 1997, and how it developed into Safety Not Guaranteed.
“From the producers of Little Miss Sunshine – When an unusual classified ad inspires three cynical Seattle magazine employees to look for the story behind it, they discover a mysterious eccentric named Kenneth, a likable but paranoid supermarket clerk, who believes hes solved the riddle of time travel and intends to depart again soon. Together, they embark on a hilarious, smart, and unexpectedly heartfelt journey that reveals how far believing can take you.”
Colin Trevorrow makes a terrific directorial debut, directing from a script penned by Derek Connolly, also making an impressive feature debut.
Aubrey Plaza is nothing short of brilliant in the lead, with a great cast alongside her including Mark Duplass (co-writer-director of recently-released Jeff, Who Lives At Home), Jake M. Johnson (New Girl), Karan Soni, Mary Lynn Rajskub (24), and Jeff Garlin (Curb Your Enthusiasm).
Safety Not Guaranteed will be opening in select theatres in New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Portland on 8th June, before expanding over the next few weeks to include the following cities: Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, Boston, Atlanta, Washington (D.C.), Houston, Phoenix, Minneapolis, Denver, San Diego, Austin, Detroit, Miami, Sacramento, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Baltimore, West Palm, Las Vegas, Albuquerque, Honolulu, Burlington (VT), Santa Barbara, and Palm Springs.
So if you live in any one of those cities, make sure you head out next month to see it! And if you happen to be lucky enough to be attending the Seattle International Film Festival at the end of the month, the film will be playing on 23rd May and 25th May, and you can buy your tickets for that here.
As yet, it hasn’t got a release scheduled in the UK, but I’m hoping that that will change if it gets the reception it deserves in the US next month.
