After emerging from bankruptcy at the end of last year, MGM appears to be going a little bit nutty for remakes; new versions of RoboCop, Poltergeist and Carrie are at various stages of development, and now the studio has hired Noah Oppenheim to script a fresh take on the classic 1983 John Badham movie War Games.

The original starred a young Matthew Broderick (alongside ‘80s movie staple Ally Sheedy) as a computer whizz-kid who, back in the days when Pong and Space Invaders were considered cutting-edge, manages to hack into a military computer and is almost responsible for kicking-off World War III.

It was previously announced in June that Horrible Bosses director Seth Gordon has been lined up to helm the new version. No news yet on a potential release date for the film, nor as to whether it will have any connection to 2008’s direct-to-DVD sequel War Games: Dead Code (though I’d hazard a guess that it probably won’t).

In the meantime, who’s up for a game of Global Thermonuclear War then?
