Transformers-4-LogoWith Michael Bay returning to the fold for Paramount to take the helm for Transformers 4, we were expecting the franchise to take things in a new direction for the upcoming movie – which is, itself, set to launch a new trilogy.

Exactly how different a direction that would be, we weren’t quite sure. But Deadline are now reporting that Kelsey Grammer has landed the key villain role in the upcoming, as-yet-untitled Transformers 4, and note that the role is for a human antagonist.

Until now, no humans have taken a leading role in Bay’s take on the franchise, with Megatron and Sentinel Prime being the big bads in the first three films. Naturally, with Grammer taking the lead villain role this time around, we’re expecting a different and exciting change of pace.

Grammer’s role is that of a man named Harold Attinger, a man in counter-intelligence.

Whilst the official synopsis remains under wraps, it’s expected that the film will revolve around,

a group of powerful, ingenious businessman and scientists [who] attempt to learn from past Transformer incursions and push the boundaries of technology beyond what they can control—all while an ancient, powerful Transformer menace sets Earth in his crosshairs.

Grammer joins an already impressive cast, led by Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, Nicola Peltz, and Jack Reynor, with Bay directing from a script by Ehren Kruger (Transformers: Dark of the Moon).

Bay is coming off the back of directing Pain and Gain for Paramount, which topped the US box office in its opening weekend at the end of last month.

Transformers 4 is set to get underway in July, with the film’s release date already set for June 27th / July 4th, 2014. And with a human leading the opposition this time around, things are definitely going to get interesting.
