Pacific-Rim-Poster-ExtinctGuillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim has been shaping up brilliantly in recent months to become one of the most anticipated blockbusters of the year, with del Toro bringing us the biggest monster movie we’ve seen on the big screen in some time.

After catching the awesome new WonderCon trailer this week, along with an epic new banner, Warner Bros.’ Japanese arm have debuted a new promo video, kicking things off with del Toro himself talking a little about wanting to honour the traditions of manga, mecha, and Kaiju movies.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes–a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)–who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Rob Kazinsky, Max Martini, and Ron Perlman take the lead, with del Toro directing from a script he co-wrote with Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans).

There’s already been talk of a Pacific Rim sequel ahead of the film’s release, and if everything goes well in a few months’ time, we could well be looking at an epic new franchise for Warner Bros. and del Toro in the years to come.

Pacific Rim will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D on July 12th in the US and UK, and that’s definitely a release date you’ll want to commit to memory if you haven’t already. This is going to be awesome.
