In my everyday life I’m not a big fan of contract law, but damn if the Marvel movies don’t make it exciting. There’s the longstanding rights issues that make discussing any crossover a labyrinth, and then there’s the actors’ contracts, which are complicated masses of commitments that secretly say a lot about the future of the franchise: Sebastian Stan is currently only three movies into a nine picture deal, suggesting grander things in Bucky’s future.

One actor it’s been unclear how many films he’d star in is Tom Holland. That is, until now. Speaking with THR, the Spider-Man star revealed he’s signed what could be called the standard Marvel contract, one that’s very similar to what Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth: three solo films and three “other” movies.

This is actually rather revealing about Marvel and Sony’s wider plans for the web-slinger. We’ll be getting a Spidey trilogy, likely seeing the character work through high school, running alongside a few team-ups. One of those we’ve already got – his debut in Captain America: Civil War – and it’s not crazy to suggest appearances in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4, which… wraps things up.

Given the tight timeline of the Avengers films, this to me suggests Sony are trying to keep Spidey more on their side of the fence long-term, using the Marvel presence as an audience boost before having their own series run away with itself. And that’s before we speculate contract extension or the possibility of setting up Miles Morales.

Phew, and I thought the Keaton confirmation was the peak of Spidey fun for today.

We caught up with the new Spider-Man Tom Holland at the Captain America: Civil War premiere earlier in the year. Here’s what he had to say.
