Edge of Tomorrow was arguably one of 2014’s best movies, and now director Doug Liman looks set to reteam with leading man Tom Cruise for Mena, a 1980s set drug thriller being developed by Universal.

Ron Howard was attached to direct at one point, but Liman is now taking over. Mena brings the filmmaker back to the studio for the first time since making The Bourne Identity back in 2002. Tom Cruise on the other hand worked with them far more recently with Oblivion, Joseph Kosinski well-received sci-fi thriller.

According to Deadline, Mena revolves around Barry Seal, a pilot who, in the 1980s, was a gun runner, and drug trafficker who transported contraband for the CIA and the Medellin cartel. He was eventually shot to death by the latter in Baton Rouge. The title refers to Mena, Arkansas, where a lot of the illegal activity took place, under the noses of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and then-Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton.

Cruise will take on the role of Seal, and if all goes to plan, the movie will star shooting sometime this year.

Cross Creek Pictures are set to fully finance Mena and Cross Creek’s Brian Oliver and Tyler Thompson will produce alongside Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer and Quadrant Pictures’ Doug Davison.
