The trailer for Guillermo Del Toro’s quirky romantic fantasy drama, The Shape of Water has arrived with Sally Hawkins taking centre stage portraying her affection for a sea creature.

Set in the backdrop of the Cold War in 1963, Hawkins plays Elisa, a mute janitor working in a government laboratory who sparks up a heroic friendship which a fish like man herself and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover in a secret lab on the grounds of the facility.

Until that is, Michael Shannon’s unpleasant evil scientist Strickland has other plans for the creature as he plans to kill the being to find out what it is and how it works.

The Shape of Water

Hawkins, who shines in a quirky role, plays a timid sweet woman, similar to her upcoming role in Maudie –  Starting out the trailer in a groundhog day state, the trailer plays out in the same way one minute all sweetness and light the next oozing gloom and doom as the score changes like a yo-yo.

Accompanying Hawkins and Shannon in The Shape of Water are Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg and Doug Jones with Alexandre Desplat composing the score.
