Universal have released a fantastic behind the scenes look of their reboot of The Mummy. The featurette followed the trailer that was released in the early hours of Monday morning which if you missed you can see here.

It’s well worth watching the trailer before this featurette if you haven’t already done so as the cast and filmmakers take us on a little journey talking us through how they’ve created some of the astonishing action scenes and beautiful sets. Tom Cruise narrates much of the piece which sees him joined by Russell Crowe for the first time.

The Mummy is one of Universal’s oldest movie franchises with the first film released back in 1932. The Mummy was followed by The Mummy’s Hand in 1940, The Mummy’s Tomb in 1942, The Mummy’s Ghost and The Mummy’s Curse both released in 1944 and Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy in 1955. Since then various other incarnations ahve come along including the Hammer Horror series which spanned 1959-1971. It was then Stephen Simmers who revived the franchise nearly 3 decades later bringing it into the modern era.

2001’s The Mummy Returns saw a WWE star named The Rock come onto the scene which created spin-off movie The Scorpion King in 2002. Since then The Rock has become Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and even more recently just Dwayne Johnson as one of the nicest men in Hollywood comes one of the biggest stars around.

Many people are asking why Tom Cruise has become involved in The Mummy franchise when he has his finger in so many movie pies already. With the sixth Mission: Impossible movie announced for release 2018, Jack Reacher releasing the second movie in 2016 and talk of Top Gun 2 (which he seems reluctant to commit to talking about – see below below), it’s no wonder people have asked questions.

Tom Cruse Reluctant to Commit to Top Gun 2

This featurette gives all the reason you’re going to need. Cruise grew up loving these movies and it’s great to see a movie fan able to follow their passion to create something new and fresh. The tone of this new movie seems very different to the 1999, 2001 and 2002 movies so time will tell if this new incarnation captures audience imagination. As Tom Cruise we know, loves to do effects practically and one of the highlights in this new featurette is watching them in a vomit comet as they shoot that fabulous zero gravity sequence.

Alex Kurtzman takes the helm of this latest movie, much of which was shot here in the UK. Take a look at the featurette below and let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

The Mummy is set for release in the UK June 9th and also stars Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis and Jake Johnson.
