When a film you loved as a child celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary you can’t help feel a little old, yet readers of our blog will know the place Richard Donner’s film has in our hearts. The name does give it away somewhat…

Spielberg, Columbus and Donner created something wonderful with the adventures of Mikey, Mouth, Data, Chunk, Sloth, Brand, Stef and Andy and the vibrant fan community which champions the film to this day is a testament to the film’s magic.

The 7th of June 1985 marked the release of The Goonies in the US, and this weekend Goonies from all over the world gathered in Astoria in Oregon for the celebrations and our own Andy Petrou is out there, and sent us thisĀ  picture.

Everyone has a film which captured their imagination as a child, and for many of us The Goonies was that film. It was our first crush in what became a love of film, and was a great example of what a good, enjoyable film could do, and while we’re not immune to criticism of the movie (we usually don our rose tints when watching the film again), the fact that it played its part in our movie going lives is important.

So, this is not just to celebrate The Goonies film, some people prefer Back to the Future, others outright hate it, but for us, who saw it at just the right time in our lives, it’s an important connection to our past, and to those early movie going experiences which have continued and evolved to this day.

To some extent we’re all still Goonies at heart, and whatever that means to us personally, today is a good time to celebrate that.

Happy Birthday to all U Guys!
