David Fincher and Daniel Craig are both orbiting the English language of one of the most successful films of the last twelve months, and Sony have now issued a release date for the film. All they need now is the Girl in question.

It seems like an eternity ago that the Spider-Man reboot was announced. Due for a release only ten short years after Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, a new origin story and new cast were announced to wipe the slate, in this case a multi-billion dollar franchise, clean. Back then it seemed shocking that a film might be rebooted with the original still a recent memory; oh how things have changed.

2010 saw the release of Death at a Funeral, an American remake of the 2007 British original. With just three years separating films, it was only a matter of time before this unofficial record was broken.

Also released in 2010, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, an adaptation of the first novel in Stieg Larsson’s The Millennium Series, is due to grace screens once more in 2011 having similarly undergone an American facelift. The original, directed by Sweden’s Niels Arden Oplev and starring Noomi Rapace, has reportedly made an impressive 1.6 million worldwide.

Though this remake might seem the most pointless of all, Sony co-chairman Amy Pascal’s desire to make the trilogy with David Fincher is certainly encouraging. Fincher’s The Social Network looks very interesting, while his previous film, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, earned him 13 Academy Award nominations.

Although the lead female role has not yet been cast, Pascal has stated:

“We are going to do a global search on her. Every actress in the world wants it. It’s the greatest character for a girl since I-don’t-know-what.”

Opinions? Can Rapace’s performance ever be bettered? What will you be throwing at Sony if they even so much as look in Megan Fox’s direction?

Sony’s Columbia Pictures will release The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo on December 21, 2011.

ComingSoon and TheWrap told us so.
