Jesse-Eisenberg-in-The-DoubleRichard Ayoade made his feature directorial debut with Submarine back in 2010, and his follow-up, The Double, has been anticipated from the word go because of it.

Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska take the lead for his sophomore feature, based on Dostoevsky’s novella of the same name. The film has just had its world premiere over the weekend out in Toronto, and TIFF have launched the first trailer online.

Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska star in writer-director Richard Ayoade’s updating of the famous Dostoevsky novella about a man who finds his life being usurped by his doppelganger.

“You’re in my place.” So begins meek Simon’s descent into a nightmare while on his way to work. Simon is referring to his usual seat on the subway, but it’s a phrase with worrying echoes. Because the man occupying Simon’s seat looks exactly like him: a double.

Eisenberg and Wasikowska top a terrific cast, starring alongside Wallace Shawn, Noah Taylor, Rade Serbedzija, Cathy Moriarty, Gemma Chan, James Fox, and Yasmin Paige.

Ayoade is directing from a script he co-wrote with Avi Korine (Mister Lonely), and Michael Caine serves as executive producer.

The film is already set to be released by StudioCanal here in the UK, and is heading to TIFF looking for its US distributor.

No word yet on when we can expect to see The Double in cinemas, but here’s to hoping that StudioCanal will be releasing it on our shores before the year’s end, and in plenty of time for a run at the BAFTAs.

Since graduating, I spend as much time as possible watching films/TV shows, reading books, and listening to music. So getting to write about what I love is nothing short of awesome. Biggest film-related hope for 2014/ever: Guy Ritchie announcing the RocknRolla sequel is finally moving forward.
