Following his Oscar-winning turn in The Theory of Everything Eddie Redmayne undergoes another transformation in the leading role of Tom Hooper’s new film The Danish Girl.

Telling the true story of Einar Wegener, the recipient of the first instance of sex reassignment surgery, and his wife Gerda Wegene, The Danish Girl has been in varying degrees of production since David Ebershoff’s book came out in 2000. Directors Tomas Alfredson and Lasse Hallström were attached, along with Charlize Theron and then Nicole Kidman (in Redmayne’s role).

Telling the transformative story of Lili Elbe seems like a perfect fit for Tom Hooper whose ability to dive into the intimacies of a hidden life have made his films so compelling. The film is out on New Year’s Day 2016. Expect Oscars.
