One of the highlights of last year’s Venice Film Festival Brady Corbet’s The Childhood of a Leader has its first trailer, and you can see it below.

We awarded the film four stars in our glowing review from the festival (which you can read here), giving plaudits to the complex performance of the child in question, Tom Sweet, and Scott Walker’s riveting score, which can be previewed below.

Adapted from a Jean-Paul Sartre short story the film chronicles the fortunes of an American family placed in Versailles at the of the First World War. The family’s son grows increasingly fractious and difficult as the treaty negotiations continue around him, and all struggle to cope.

THE-CHILDHOOD-OF-A-LEADERWell-known to many now as The Onion Knight, Game of Thrones’ Liam Cunningham plays the boy’s father, with Bérénice Bejo the boy’s mother. Just a glimpse of Brady Corbet’s powerful debut is enough to place it firmly on your must-see list.

Metrodome are releasing the film here in the UK on the 19th of August, here’s your trailer.

Berenice Bejo and Robert Pattinson star in this chilling story of the birth of a monster.  The film also stars Stacy Martin, Liam Cunningham and Yolande Moreau

An American family settles into the French countryside at the end of the First World War, where the father (Liam Cunningham) is involved in the peace negotiations around the Treaty of Versailles. His wife (Berenice Bejo) is a devout Christian who struggles with the tantrums of their defiant young son, whose wilful outbursts begin to demonstrate a monster in the making.

Infused with the same sense of dread as The Others and The Omen, The Childhood of a Leader is an ominous portrait of emerging evil.
