Joss Whedon is bringing us one of the biggest (and almost certainly best) blockbusters of the year, and we’re just over a month away before it hits the big screen. To say I’m looking forward to The Avengers would be just a little bit of an understatement.

This week, we saw a host of new images from the film, as well as its first IMAX TV spot, and now we have another set of eleven brilliant new images to share with you, and just looking at them is getting me even more excited about seeing it at the end of month.

Whedon is directing from his own script, and naturally we can look forward to seeing all our favourite superheroes and characters from the recent entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the form of Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr., with Paul Bettany returning as JARVIS), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo, taking over from Edward Norton), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg), Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), and Loki (Tom Hiddleston).

The official synopsis is thankfully essentially entirely spoiler-free, and looks a little like this:

“Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures “Marvel’s The Avengers”–the Super Hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel Super Heroes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, CaptainAmerica, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, and directed by Joss Whedon, “Marvel’s The Avengers” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. Prepare yourself for an exciting event movie, packed with action and spectacular special effects, when “Marvel’s The Avengers” assemble in summer 2012. In “Marvel’s The Avengers,” superheroes team up to pull the world back from the brink of disaster when an unexpected enemy threatens global security.”

Here in the UK, we’ll see the film released under the title Avengers Assemble, and everything we’ve seen so far from the film (all of which you can catch up on here) has been nothing short of immense. Whedon looks to have done a fantastic job of bringing all the characters together – as we always knew he would.

The Avengers will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D on 26th April here in the UK (a day earlier than first planned, giving us the chance to see it even earlier on Thursday night), and will then be hitting the big screen in the US on 4th May. I literally cannot wait. As usual with these awesome new images, you can click to enlarge.
