Taika Waititi’s fire doesn’t seem to be going out anytime soon. Since ‘Hunt For The Wilderpeople’ and ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, this is one director who can do no wrong. So it comes as no surprise that Waititi has reportedly been approached by LucasFilm and Disney to tackle a new ‘Star Wars’ movie.

With no comment coming from either LucasFilm or Disney their it is unclear where the talks stand and what the project even is.

As well as the awards nominated ‘Jojo Rabbit’, Waititi directed the closing episode on the Disney+ ‘Star Wars’ spin-off ‘The Mandalorian’, he also played the droid IG-11. It would make sense the director would be in-line to take the helm of a feature-length movie for the franchise, which fans have speculated for a number of weeks.

Only this past week, Variety had asked Waititi if he could be in line to be part of the franchise going forward to which he replied;

Oh, I don’t know anything about that,” Waititi said. “But ‘Mandalorian’ was my chance to work with some Stormtroopers.”

“Obviously I would, but I’m going to just settle for IG-11 being the hero of the entire season,” he said.

Whilst ‘Jojo Rabbit’ is still in cinemas with six Oscar nominations under its belt, Waititi isn’t slowing down. He has just wrapped on his next project ‘Next Goal Wins’ starring Michael Fassbender and Elisabeth Moss. He will then move on in the directing chair to return to Marvel’s ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ whilst still being attached to helm ‘Akira’. As for the acting side, he will be appearing in James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’.

The next instalment in the ‘Star Wars’ franchise isn’t due to be released until December 2022.
